Pampering and Parties

 Saturday, March 20, 2010
My friends gave my mom and I a gift certificate to the spa. We decided to go ahead and use those! It's been a long week! We got done just in time to take the kids to their friend Sailer's birthday party. This mama knows how to throw a party! Check out the party pics fit for a princess for sure!  Some pics courtesy of Alyssa Maisano Photography!  Thanks lyss!

Happy Anniversary to Us!

Friday, March 19, 2010

Today is our 5 year anniversary.  We were supposed to spend the weekend in Vegas, but due to the circumstances we are in, we didn't go.  We just had a quiet dinner at Ruth Chris in Dallas.  After we went and saw some of our friend's in the hospital who had just had a new baby.  It's funny how the circle of life works.  Someone dies and another little person is born. I don't even have a pic of us at dinner or of the sweet new baby.

The Week After...

Monday, March 14, 2010- Thursday, March 18, 2010

This was Spring Break for most people. A time of fun in the sun, laughing and family time. All I can remember from this week was going to my mom's house every day. Staying in, watching movies (no romantic comedies) and just being. We got through this week somehow. It's crazy how life just moves on. I almost feel guilty moving on with my life. Thank goodness I have two sweet babies to tend to every day. They make me get out of bed in the morning and get moving. I guess that is a blessing in diguise.

Bye Bye Crib... Hello Toddler Bed

Friday, March 12, 2010

In the midst of this horrible week, Angelo has been crawling out of his bed. NONSTOP. I'm to the point that I'm afraid he's going to fall out and get hurt. I gave in and gave his pacifier back to him. I just had a hard week and thought if I gave it back, he would stay in his bed. Not so much. Rudy put together his toddler bed tonight. Angelo was super excited! Of course, this all happened so fast, I have no bedding yet, but a blanket will do for now!

The Eulogy

3/12/10

My mom and aunt started this "top 10 reasons we love Ron" list a few nights back so this is what I took my inspiration from.  I didn't give them all the reasons, but gave a sort of amended version.

1.  He was a man of integrity.  If he told you he was going to do something, he just did it.  He kept his word.  We could always count on him.  He would babysit for me, or go wait for the plumber at my house.

2.  Dad never met anyone that he didn't like right off the bat.  He always gave everyone the benefit of the doubt.

3.  He was a great father, husband and grandfather.  He was one of those dads that was there after school.  We had family dinner together every night.
Whatever we were into, he was into.  In middle school, I played basketball.  He put a BB goal in our driveway so I could practice.  My brother played golf so dad took him to the driving range.  He was always the little league coach for his t-ball teams.
My dad was an amazing grandfather.  He was so excited to have grandkids.  Angelo loved him so much.  My dad would let him "drive" in his car forever out in the garage, pushing all the buttons and honking the horn.  He even wore a pink shirt the day Lola was born.
Angelo broke his leg when he was 13 months old and when we went to get it casted - Big Ron just appeared.  He always knew when he was needed and he was always there. Lola went through a stage where she wouldn't go to anyone - but she always went to him.  She saw him so much that she was comfortable around him.

4.  He spoiled my mom and said YES more than he said NO.  Every house they had - she always wanted a pool.  He gave in everytime and was her "pool boy".  All my mom had to say to get him to do something was say, "Oh come on Ronnie..." and he would say YES!

5.  He was such a great partner to my mom.  He loved to do projects with her.  He would help her texture and paint rooms, work in the yard and help her clean the house.  But he didn't really ever cook.  Maybe grill steaks or make eggs and bacon.  But my mom did the cooking... every night.

6.  He made us LAUGH.  He had a great sense of humor.  My mom would be bossing us around - trying to get the house cleaned for something - and when she turned her back, he'd look at me and give me the "yes boss salute".
My favorite memory of growing up was that he played "BAR" with me in the pool... (odd game to play with your 6 year old, I know).  But we would laugh forever.  and I would make him do it again and again.  Now we've passed on this tradition with Angelo... and he goes crazy laughing every time too.

7.  He was a great vacation planner.  He got excited to search places for us to go.  We were lucky that every summer we went to the beach and some winters we went skiing.  He drove to Lubbock one time and picked up Bryan and they went snowboarding together in NM.  What a cool dad!  One of my favorites was a super cool house we stayed at in St. Martin.  I always hoped once he got well that we could go back there.

8.  He worked hard for our family.  He was up and out by 4:30am for 20 years.  I know that when we needed something - money for school - he always came through.  He paid for both our colleges with hard work and thanks to him we have no student loans to pay back.

We find peace and comfort knowing that my dad is no longer suffering.  The pain is gone and he is looking down on us now.  I urge you to hug your loved ones tonight and tell them how much you love them.  Which was another great thing about my dad - he always hugged us and told us he loved us everytime we left him.  because you never know when you won't get that opportunity.

I miss you every day more and more.

The Funeral

Friday, March 12, 2010

Again, I can't remember anything before or after the funeral.  I only remember the funeral and the gravesite service.  I know I'm terrified to speak in public, but I knew it was my job to give the eulogy.  I had told the pastor prior to this, that I would be the one to give it.  No one else.  No one could do this (in my mind), but me.  My dad and I had such a special bond.  I didn't feel right about anyone else getting up there to speak.  I was with my dad or talked to him everyday for the last 4 years.  We worked together and he came over to help me with the kids during the day.  I talked Rudy into going first.  Love that husband of mine.  I figured if he could start, I could get the courage to finish.  So, I though I'd give the cliff notes version of our eulogy.  This way it stays in print forever.

Rudy started off by "thanking everyone for the support we received this week.  It was much appreciated and will never be forgotten.  Ron would be amazed at the overwhelming support."  Then he shared a few things about my dad that were special to him.  His deep voice.  Rudy was forever in awe of his voice.  I think a little scared while dating me of what would come out of that voice.  But then my sweet husband started in on "two things that will leave the greatest impact on my life about Ron.
1.  He was an amazing family man.  He adored my mother in law and still looked like a teenager in love if you spent anytime around them.  He would light up and was so proud of his children.  You could get him talking for hours about them and more recently his grandchildren.
2.  His integrity.  No matter what the situation or the circumstance, he was a man of his word."

So sweet of Rudy to stand up there beside me and break the ice so I could get the jitters out while listening to him.  By the time it was my turn, I felt ok.  A sense of peace had come over me long enough for me to do this.

Visitation

Thursday, March 11, 2010

I can't remember anything about today except that somehow I got myself to the funeral home for visitation today at 6pm.  I was overwhelmed with the flowers that filled the room when I walked in.  Then I was again moved by how many people loved my dad and were there to tell me so.  I know I loved him.  He was the best dad I could have asked for.  Always there.  It's nice to see what kind of impact he had on others.  He was a great person to everyone.  I can't find my pictures of him at this time, but here's a few from our wedding.

Funeral Arrangements

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

I did something today that I thought I wouldn't have to do for 30 more years.  We made funeral arrangements for my dad.  We had to pick out a casket and lots of other sad things that we didn't anticipate.  If I learned anything from today, it's that I will make my own funeral arrangements (and prepay!) before my time comes.  It's not something fun to talk about.  But I also don't want my grieving family to have to worry about it either.  It's hard.  It's a hard week.  It's going in slow motion.

And My World Just Stopped...

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

I've been avoiding this blog (I'm so far behind it's Sept 1st and I'm finally trying to catch up) since 3/9/10.  This was the day my whole world stopped and went into slow motion.  I had a doctor's appt. this morning at 7:30am, which never happens.  I NEVER make dr. appts this early EVER!  So, I had Ana coming over at 7am so I could run to the dr while the kids were still sleeping.  My phone rang at 7:03am and nothing has been the same since.  I'm convinced God intervened here and put Ana at my house this particular morning because he knew I would need her help.  It was my mother, hysterical on the other end of the phone saying that my dad had died.  I won't go into the specifics because I don't feel like sharing those personal details.  But I rushed over to their house in about 7min going 90 miles and hour.  What happens next, I can't remember.  Today was just a blur.  A bad blur.

My dad had throat cancer for the last year and a half.  He was in so much pain we didn't even know.  But we did know.  We knew he couldn't eat and was losing weight. We knew he felt like crap every day.  But we just didn't know the level of pain.  If we did, we would have intervened.

Rest in Peace my sweet daddy.  I will miss you every day of my life.

The last phone call

Sunday, March 7, 2010

Since I knew my dad had been so sick just a few days before, I have been researching pain mangement doctors in the area.  I called him tonight to talk to him about going to this particular doctor soon.  He said he would go and then we got off the phone.  If I had only known that would be the last time I talked to him.  I would have said so much more.

Rain Rain Go Away...

On a side note... now that Angelo no longer has his pacifier at night, he now has started climbing out of his crib at night... And the fun never stops!  Toddler bed here we come!

Bye Bye PopEye

Saturday, March 6, 2010

Angelo went to work with daddy today to bury the popeye (AKA pacifier)!  He wanted to throw them in the dirt and run them over with the bulldozer.  Hey, whatever works right???
Lola, me and my mom all went to see my grandparents today.  Lola is just such a cutie pie.  Very happy, laughing baby.

Tonight was the first night that Angelo slept without his popeye.  Yeah!!! Go Angelo!
